IQ² Asia presents leading voices and influential figures in a debate, “Let The Bad Guys Be: Foreign Intervention Does More Harm Than Good.” This discussion will raise questions like: Does foreign intervention lend itself to long-term partnerships characterized by respect and progress? Does it pose fundamentally damaging practical and moral problems? What country has the right to meddle in the affairs of another? Do human rights violations compel other nations to embrace interventionism as foreign policy? Under what circumstances may the presumption of sovereign state integrity be set aside? Many employers in Hong Kong have domestic helpers who help in walking, feeding, bathing and taking their dogs for veterinary care. Although employers do their best to train their domestic helpers in the basics of pet care, a more detailed education can prepare your helper for the different situations they will encounter with your dog and help improve your pet’s welfare in the process. Enquire about the full course schedule.

As part of Social Media Week HK, we are kidnapping Valentine's Day in the name of all things lovely to show how social media can bring people together. Share in a super cool night featuring 14 lovely acts of spontaneous kindness amongst friends and strangers -- what we do will, in part, will depend on you but we have some great things cooking. Pop in before a romantic dinner or share the night with our lovely random group. The concept was originally started in Chicago by Amy Krouse Rosenthal. Bring friends, family people you meet along the way and look for the gal with the yellow umbrella.

Tired of the same old candles, chocolate hearts, and shallow conversation on Valentine's Day? Then invite your date to join you at the next meeting of the Fringe Branch of the Hong Kong Philosophy Cafe, for some genuinely deep conversation -- an existential study in objectivity and subjectivity. Our discussion will be introduced by Guy Lown and moderated by Pia Wong. We hold regularly scheduled discussions on serious, mainstream philosophical topics. Meetings begin with a designated participant introducing a particular approach to dealing with the announced topic. After others have a chance to express alternative positions and/or ask questions to the introducer, a substantial block of time is devoted to small group discussions, with participants being encouraged to migrate between groups at will. Ideas raised during small group discussions are then shared in a concluding plenary session. Please feel free to contact us if you would like to suggest a topic and/or to introduce a future meeting. The philosophy is free - you pay for any food and drinks you order.

This talk discusses how family shapes the expression and practice of sexuality of adults in mainland China. In the west, many functions and roles of family have been substituted by the state, market and civil society. Studies mainly focus on how public sphere shapes people’s sexuality. While unlike its western counterpart, Chinese family is still an important institution for production, welfare and education. Besides, family value is especially emphasized even in contemporary Chinese culture. Thus the patterns of family’s power and influence on people’s sexuality are also distinct from those of western family, yet the relations between the family and sexuality in mainland China is rarely discussed. This research intends to enrich the understanding on how family impact on adult children’s sexuality by focusing on “functional marriage” popularly practiced by homosexuals in mainland China. It mainly tries to analyze the mechanism of familial influence on sexuality from five major channels, such as family network, resource allocation, care provision, blood ties and negotiating capacity. The main approach adopted in this research is to make comparisons among three types of family: 1) families with one child vs. families with more than one child; 2) urban families vs. rural families; 3) families with son(s) vs. families with daughter(s). I argue that the distinct structure, function and role of Chinese family determine that its influence on people's sexuality is more active and broad than that of western family. This research also has implications for those less developed countries or more family-centered societies in which family is different from the typical western nuclear family.
